It was much slower paced than normal, focused far too much on things outside the original scope of the series, and basically left a lot of room for all those previously ignored flaws to start mattering again.
This book did the opposite of sticking to that formula. These books were lacking in many areas, but by sticking so closely to that premise and keeping the pace fast, those issues were easily ignored. I mentioned in my review of the last book how this series has been losing its way as it forgot to stay focused on the core premise of the series a successful business man using his business knowledge and experience to thrive in a fantasy setting. I made it about 85% of the way through it as well, but as I sat down to read the final stretch I couldn't help but ask myself why bother? Unfortunately I couldn't find an answer. As always, Charles will look to turn each challenge into an opportunity, to consolidate his position en route to developing Liora's first true superpower and bring him one step closer to winning the game of the gods. His new adventures will lead him to a strange island with magical goats, and culminate in a perilous trip into the Necropolis.
